Bella was NOT pleased 😂 Are we the only ones who were shocked to find that this hike ends at a freeway overpass?? The road up was closed so this 2 mile hike ended up being a 7miler for us. We had a blast anyway (and if you can drive up it would be a lovely little jaunt) but the sound of cars definitely detracts from the sound of the falls. We’d still recommend it if you’re nearby but if it’s a couple hour drive for you and/or you’re looking to get lost in nature in the North Bend area, maybe try Rattlesnake Ledge, Dirty Harry’s Balcony, or Heybrook Lookout.

📍Icicle Gorge

We usually visit Leavenworth in snow season but since Bella had a competition in Wenatchee this month, we also fit in a summer visit. Our free day was right before her big skate ⛸️ so we opted for an easy hike. Bella has grown skeptical of what I consider an “easy” adventure (which I guess is fair), so now she asks me more specific questions about elevation gain and the like.

For those of you, like Bella, who may be dubious, Icicle Gorge is *legitimately* the easiest hike we’ve ever done in the PNW. It’s really more of a gentle 4 mile stroll with only 150 feet of elevation gain and phenomenal gorge and river views throughout.

The access road (Forest Service Rd 7600) is the roughest part so be sure you have good tires and don’t mind getting your car dusty. Also maybe better suited for a vehicle with decent clearance. After hiking 🥾head over to the charming Bavarian town of Leavenworth (a 30 min drive) for a bite to eat.

Painted trees = magic.

The rainbow eucalyptus has the potential for all these colors just beneath its bark. They aren’t revealed, though, until the tree ages and sheds, leaving its chlorophyll exposed. The interplay of oxygen and tannins with that chlorophyll results in a rainbow of colors.

Seeing a rainbow eucalyptus feels like a sign. It’s up to you whether or not you choose to follow. If you do, it may entice you to answer: What potential is quickening just beneath the surface of your life? What are you just beginning to discover about yourself as you live and grow? How might you change from interacting with the world around you? What wild beauty is waiting to be revealed?

First proper hike in Olympic NP & it’s in our top 5 hikes EVER 🏔️

📍Switchback Trail ➕ Klahhane Ridge. Steep elevation gain, gorgeous wildflowers, plenty of shade pockets on the way up/down, nice breezes even on a hot day, and epic views almost the entire way. Passed maybe 5 groups of hikers/backpackers but still had plenty of solitude and space. There was a snow patch at the top which provided lots of fun sliding and cooling off before heading back down. Also, it didn’t show up well on my phone but you can see all the way to Canada!

Hike rating: 10/10

Still blown away by the color of these alpine lakes. They’re like the Disney version of nature.

If you’re keen on a shortish kid & dog friendly summer hike, check out Thunder Knob trail in North Cascades NP.

At 3.4 miles RT and 675 feet elevation gain, this is a pretty quick jaunt for the epic views of Diablo Lake it provides. Lots of switchbacks but much more gradual than the Oregon hikes we’ve posted over on thefuturewild.com, if you’re looking for a point of comparison.

Trail notes: there’s very little shade on Thunder Knob so try to avoid going mid-day. The only part of this hike that garnered complaints was how toasty it was—but we got off schedule and ended up hiking at noon on one of the rare 90+ degree days in Northern Washington so just don’t do that! Also, as always, being more water than you think you need, especially in summer and consider packing a picnic for the viewpoint at the top.

First forage of the season!

Our mini but mighty haul of salmonberries came from our favorite wilderness. These beauties range in color from peach to orange to red. They’re the first berries to ripen in the PNW and act as a great source of food for pollinators (which is why we’re careful not to harvest too much).

Salmonberries are not only delicious, they are also full of antioxidants and trace minerals and can be used medicinally for cuts, burns, and digestive upset. They are in the rose family, however, so be prepared for thorns if you go harvesting.

At first we thought she just liked digging, but our pup also helps us harvest and guards the tender new plants. Every morning on my way to the studio, I ask Evie how her garden is doing. She seems to like having ownership of it.

We had the most magnificent time hiking to the edge of the wild, scrambling up a mountain of rocks, and racing the sunset to reach this summit. This is K on the edge trying to get the perfect photo.

Just a friendly mid-week reminder that winter is over and the wild is waiting 🏞️🏕️

We didn’t camp until May last year but we’re glad to be getting a jump on things after what’s felt like a long, albeit mild, winter.

So here’s to getting muddy and lost, to falling asleep to the sound of a rushing river, and to waking up to a cowboy breakfast around the campfire. What a lovely weekend. Wishing you ALL the nature as we start this most beautiful of seasons

Ps. It was colder at night than forecasted this past weekend. Does anyone have good sleeping bag recs rated for comfort below freezing (and under $1000)? I’m eager to keep the camping trips coming but mine is more of a 40 degree + up situation 🥶
